Prof. Dr. Emeka Nkenke is an Austrian oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He holds both medical and dental degrees and a doctorate in theoretical medicine. He is Professor and Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna. He is also a consultant at Wiener Privatklinik.
He previously served as a full professor at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and as Head of Department at Halle University. He is internationally recognized for virtual surgical planning and patient-specific implants. His expertise also includes orthognathic surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, cleft lip and palate surgery, microvascular jaw reconstruction, distraction osteogenesis, and guided dental implant surgery. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery and serves on the editorial boards of other journals.

Prof. Dr. Emeka Nkenke is an internationally recognized oral and maxillofacial surgeon, renowned for his expertise in facial reconstruction, implantology, orthognathic surgery, and craniofacial oncology. With an exceptional career spanning clinical innovation, academic leadership, and international collaboration, he is regarded as one of Europe’s leading figures in reconstructive facial surgery.
He studied medicine and dentistry at the University of Erlangen–Nürnberg (Germany), completing both degrees in the 1990s, followed by specialization in oral and maxillofacial surgery. His dual qualification in medicine and dentistry provided the foundation for his comprehensive approach to facial and jaw reconstruction.
1990s – Completed studies in medicine and dentistry; began specialization in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
2000s – Focused on craniofacial reconstruction, implantology, and bone regeneration, developing surgical techniques that integrate functional and aesthetic outcomes.
2010s – Appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, where he established advanced training programs and research initiatives in reconstructive surgery and 3D planning.
Today – Serves as senior consultant at Wiener Privatklinik and continues academic leadership at the Medical University of Vienna, specializing in jaw reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, facial implants, and tumor-related maxillofacial surgery.
Prof. Nkenke’s research focuses on tissue engineering, implant osseointegration, and computer-assisted surgery, fields in which he has published extensively and collaborated internationally. His work has greatly contributed to improving reconstructive outcomes and surgical precision in maxillofacial care.
