Prof. Erkan Kaptanoğlu, M.D. was born in Balikesir, Turkey in 1966. After completing his primary school, secondary school and high school education in Balikesir, he graduated from Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine in 1990. He completed his internship at Peterborough District Hospital and Lincoln County Hospital in the United Kingdom. After a year of compulsory medical service, he completed his residency, which he had started in 1992, at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital in 1997 and became a Neurosurgery Specialist. After being assigned at the same hospital as Chief Resident in the same year, he studied “spinal cord injury and spinal cord regeneration” as a “research fellow” alongside Prof. Charles Tator, M.D., at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1998-1999. After returning from Canada in 1999, he was tasked by the Ministry of Health to establish a Field Hospital and to work in cooperation with the Turkish Red Crescent Society at Hakkari, Şemdinli for two months. Following this assignment, he volunteered to work for the 1999 Marmara Earthquake relief effort.

He became an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery in 2004. He earned the title Doctor of Science (Ph.D.) by completing a doctorate program on Advanced Neuroscience between 2000-2005, at Hacettepe University Institute of Medical Sciences. He joined the project for autologous stem cell therapy in human spinal cord injuries with the Departments of Neurosurgery and Hematology at the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. In 2009, he was appointed as Deputy Chief to the 1st Neurosurgery Clinic at the Ankara Numune Hospital, where he had been working.

At this hospital, in which he worked until 2010, he supervised and attended complex cranial, pediatric, spinal, trauma and vascular neurosurgery operations. He continued his academic research at Ankara University, Department of Anatomy and research laboratories of Ankara University and Hacettepe University for the purpose of developing strategies for complex spinal surgery operations.

With his research on spinal cord injuries and spinal anatomy, he won many awards such as the Acibadem Hospital Medical Research Award, 1st Place in 2000, Turkish Neurosurgical Society Dr. Mahir Tevruz Scientific Research Award, Tübitak and Brain Research Society Wheyt Award in 2001, Turkish Neurosurgical Society Hamit Ziya Gokalp Young Neurosurgeons Research Award, 2nd Place in 2002, Turkish Neurosurgical Society Yildiz Yalcinlar Scientific Research Award in 2004.

In 2010, he went to Cyprus to found the Near East University Faculty of Medicine Hospital with the guidance of Hacettepe University, and was appointed as full Professor. Between 2010-2015, he served as the Founder and Head of Department at the Near East University and Founder and Deputy Chief Physician at the University Training and Research Hospital in TRNC.

In 2000-2001, he served as a member of the editorial board for Türk Nöroşirurji Dergisi and Turkish Neurosurgery journal. Between the years 2001-2006, he served as an assistant editor for Türk Nöroşirurji Dergisi and Turkish Neurosurgery journals. In 2002-2003, he served as the Chairman of the Young Neurosurgeons Committee under the Turkish Neurosurgical Society. He was elected to the Turkish Neurosurgical Society Spinal and Peripheral Nerve Surgery Group Board of Directors to serve between 2003-2009. In 2013, he was again elected as a member to the Turkish Neurosurgical Society Spinal and Peripheral Nerve Surgery Group Board of Directors. In 2015, he became the Chairman of the Turkish Neurosurgical Society Spinal and Peripheral Nerve Surgery Group Board of Directors. In 2018, he was elected as a member to the Board of Turkish Neurosurgery Academy.

In 2015, he was appointed to the Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery and was elected as the Head of Department. During the same period, he also served as the Director of the Institute of Neuroscience. In 2018, he completed his tenure as the Head of Department. Reaching the end of this tenure in 2019, he retired from his duties as the Director of the Institute of Neuroscience and as a Member of the Faculty of Medicine. During his tenure at Marmara University, he supervised and accompanied surgical operations for complex cases from cranial patients to brain tumors (gliomas, meningiomas and hypophysis adenomas in particular), cerebral hemorrhages, Parkinson’s disease, trauma and vascular neurosurgery. He performed complex spinal surgery operations such as surgeries for spinal deformities (e.g. scoliosis and kyphosis), thoracoscopic spinal surgeries and sacral tumor surgeries. He conducted research and experimental studies on stem cell therapy and regeneration in spinal cord injuries. Between 2019-2020, currently He continues his clinical practice and surgeries along with his local and international academic studies, from his private clinic and Istanbul Brain and Spine Center.

He has attended numerous national and international courses and meetings as an instructor and speaker, was a guest speaker in over 100 events and conferences. He has published 65 international, 35 national scientific articles, edited 7 books, written 52 book chapters. He has served in the organizational committee 5 times in international meetings and 22 times in national meetings.

He is a member of the Turkish Medical Association, Turkish Cypriot Medical Association, Turkish Neurosurgical Society, Turkish Spine Society, EUROSPINE, AO Spine, Turkish Neurosurgery Academy.

Dr. Halil Can is a Professor of Neurosurgery (2025; Associate Professor 2020). He completed neurosurgical training at Istanbul University–Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2007. His clinical focus includes endoscopic and microsurgical spine surgery for fractures, tumors, and degenerative disease; advanced pain procedures; endoscopic skull base and pituitary surgery; and neurovascular, neuro-oncologic, and peripheral nerve surgery.

He has 21 international peer-reviewed papers (SCI/SSCI). Topics include cadaveric morphometry of Kambin’s triangle and the transforaminal triangular working zone, lumbar arterial and anterior approach anatomy, and an in vitro test of a new lumbar fixation device.

His clinical studies include a single-team series of 81 posterior circulation aneurysms, with 13 flow-diversion cases. He also reported five spinal cavernous malformation cases. He conducted Phase I safety and feasibility stem-cell trials in pediatric hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and in chronic complete spinal cord injury.

Dr. Bugra Bilge Keseroglu specializes in robotic and laparoscopic urology. His robotic work includes radical prostatectomy (conventional and Retzius-sparing), radical cystectomy, sacrocolpopexy, and Burch colposuspension. His laparoscopic work includes radical prostatectomy with lymph node dissection, radical cystectomy, sacrocolpopexy, and Burch colposuspension. Dr. Mehmet Tonge is a neurosurgeon with expertise in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. He specializes in MR Guided Focused Ultrasound, deep brain stimulation, Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, and surgery for movement disorders, pain, and spasticity.

Dr. Tonge has published 32 articles in international and national journals and written 12 book chapters. He has presented 92 oral and poster presentations and delivered 41 invited lectures. He completed a Deep Brain Stimulation Fellowship at Maastricht University and finished the 4-year EANS training cycle. Dr. Tonge is known for his research and clinical work in functional neurosurgery.

Professor Kyzas completed his PhD thesis in H&N Cancer with Honours (Αριστα), producing several highly cited influential publications. He has published > 70 scientific papers in high impact journals and has > 6000 citations.

Following his studies, Professor Kyzas has undertaken postgraduate training in the UK and was successful in securing a very competitive training post in the UK Higher Specialty Training Programme for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He was trained in some of the biggest University Teaching hospitals in the North West of the UK. He has been awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by the General Medical Council (GMC). Subsequently, he was successful in securing one of the very few and prestigious UK-wide Training Interface (TIG) Fellowships in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology. He has successfully completed his fellowship and was awarded the subspecialty of Head and Neck Surgery by the Joint Committee of Surgical training (JCST).

In 2014 he has been appointed as a permanent substantive Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Surgery in Manchester. He has treated hundreds of patients with Head and Neck cancer, offering state of the art major ablative and reconstructive surgery. He specialises in microvascular free tissue transfer and he has introduced and developed the 3D printer – personalised planning (PSP) reconstructive surgery in his hospital. He led his unit to become a reference centre by having the highest number of successful 3D PSP cases in the UK. Besides head and neck cancer, Professor Kyzas offers treatment to patients with facial skin cancer, oral and maxillofacial trauma, dentoalveolar surgery, orthognathic surgery, salivary gland diseases, facial cosmetic surgery, surgery of the temporomandibular joint, and anything else within the broad spectrum of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has performed many thousands of surgical procedures and has vast experience in any oral and maxillofacial condition. He has a special interest in the use of laser for oral pathologies and he is the Principal Investigator for an international trial examining the effectiveness of Transoral Laser resection in Ηead and Νeck Cancer. He is a certified microvascular surgeon and has accreditation in advanced trauma life support (ATLS).

Just before the covid pandemic, Professor Kyzas was presented with a unique opportunity to lead on the development of a Head and Neck Cancer Service in Lancashire. Professor Kyzas and his team managed to establish the service within months, and throughout the challenging covid period. The ELHT H&N Unit now produces oncological outcomes that compare favourably with any major H&N unit worldwide. Professor Kyzas has been appointed as the Clinical Director for all cancer services in ELHT, covering population of > 1M people.

In 2021, Professor Kyzas has been awarded the highly prestigious Bronze National Clinical Excellence Award for his overall services in the NHS. He was the youngest consultant to achieve this award and the only Cypriot OMFS surgeon ever to be considered for one.

Professor Kyzas has a long history of involvement in medical research. In 2007 he has completed his PhD thesis which has resulted in several highly cited publications in some of the most prestigious medical journals. He has participated in international collaborations for the improvement of medical research (http://progress-partnership.org/publications) and some of his papers have had a significant impact in improving research methodology. He has given several invited international lectures, and he has presented in national and international conferences. He has been a panel member for the selection committees for trainees in every level in oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the UK. He is a regular peer-reviewer for many medical journals. He is the Lead trainer for the TIG H&N fellowship for his hospital and the Research Lead for his Deanery. He participates actively in Clinical Research, and he is the Principal Investigator for many clinical trials. He is a faculty member for the «Head and Neck resection tactics and free flap» course run by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He offers themed training in Head and Neck Oncological Surgery to medical students. In 2018 he was awarded the «Surgical Educator Excellence Award» by Health Education North West (HEENW). In the same year, he was nominated as doctor of the year in Northern Care Alliance.

Professor Kyzas is the Chief Investigator of the MANTRA trial, a UK multicentre RCT with multimillion pounds NIHR funding, launched in July 2023. This is the biggest randomised controlled trial ever to be performed in the specialty of OMFS.

As a result of his outstanding clinical and research/academic achievements, Professor Kyzas has been appointed as a visiting Professor in OMFS H&N Surgery at Edge Hill University

In 2018 Professor Kyzas was elected as the Deputy Editor for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS). In January 2024, Professor Kyzas started his role as Editor in Chief for the BJOMS. This is the first time that a Greek Cypriot has ever been chosen for this highly prestigious role. Professor Kyzas sits in the council of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS).

Professor Kyzas is a fully accredited medical expert witness and has provided hundreds of medical expert negligence reports (πραγματογνώμονας). In June 2024, Professor Kyzas has completed his Degree in Law with Honours (Άριστα), becoming a member of a very prestigious club of medical professionals with an active interest and certified knowledge in medicolegal practice.
